I got this stripy tee in Gap when I was probably about 12 or 13. I just fell in love with it the minute I saw it, I don't know why, it is basically just a jersey stripe tee with a V-neck but something about it just felt so special.
I was just starting to get really into fashion and clothes I had decided that I needed a stripy t-shirt and there it was just hanging there in Gap which at the time was just the coolest store in the world to me, it felt like fashion fate. I was getting to that stage where I had outgrown the 'children's section' but I didn't like any styles from the 'Teen ranges' either I just wanted all the 'grown-up' people clothes but I was too small really to fit into most of the styles but I couldn't by-pass the tee I knew I had to have it.
Unfortunately it was only in an XL adult size but even that didn't stop me, I told my mum I would grow into it soon enough and she gave in and got me it.
So here it is like 12 or so years later and in all honesty I still haven't grown into but I have definitely grown up with it.
I have worn this in so many ways i can't even begin to tell you. When i first bought it i realised that it was so big and baggy and long on me i could wear it as a dress if i belted it which i did for years, then as i got a bit taller the belt was removed and the converse were worn with it as a little mini day dress, then as i got even taller i could only wear it as a dress if i put tights on and then when it started to get just that little bit too short on me it was my go to slouchy sweater for years, i put it over shirts, skinny tees, bikinis, everything you could think and now it has become it's original purpose, the perfect tee in itself. Still that little bit too big and that little bit too loose, it makes for the perfect slouchy tee.
I can't believe how long I have had this t-shirt in my life and how many different ways in which I have been able to wear it. It's weird because I can actually pin point that day in Gap when I bought it as the day where I started to find my own style. I love simple classic styles, loose, neutral coloured pieces in simple shapes and this stripe tee was the thing that started it all, I mean can you get a more classic staple than a stripe tee?
There is something so comforting about clothes that have lasted you through the years, when I wear this I have so many memories from it that span such a long period of time. It really is so special to me, which is funny because it couldn't be a more plain tee if it tried but it has been with me through every life, style and trend phase I've had and remains a constant in my ever changing wardrobe.
So here's to our forever pieces,
May you find them, may you buy them and may you love them forever...
I would love to know about your forever pieces? Have you got a piece of clothing that has seen you through the years? Let me know...
